STAN brings together STEAM educators, communicators, organizations and professionals from across Canada to connect, collaborate, share knowledge and strengthen science and technology engagement.

Our work is powered by people who believe in the value of these connections. As a volunteer-led organization, our Board of Directors and committees play an active role in shaping STAN's direction and turning ideas into action.

We're currently welcoming applications from people interested in joining the STAN Board of Directors or one of our committees. Whether you're an experienced volunteer leader or looking for a new way to contribute to Canada's STEAM community, we'd like to hear from you.

There are different ways to contribute depending on your interests, experience and availability.

Join the Board of Directors

STAN's Board provides strategic leadership and governance while also actively supporting the organization's work.

​

We are currently open to new Board members and anticipate welcoming approximately 2–4 new directors. Applications are accepted throughout the year, and the Board may appoint new directors between annual elections as opportunities arise.

Board commitment

Board members should generally expect:

• A one-year term, renewable for up to four years before member re-election

• A Board meeting approximately every 6 weeks, generally up to 1.5 hours

• Participation on a Board committee, with meeting frequency varying by committee

• Approximately 5–10 hours per month to support meetings, projects and other Board responsibilities

• Potential travel up to once per year if STAN returns to hosting in-person activities or conferences

 

STAN is a working Board. Directors contribute not only to governance and decision-making but also to projects and initiatives that move the organization forward. As a volunteer-led organization with limited staff capacity, Board members and other volunteers are an important part of STAN's workforce.

The time required may vary throughout the year depending on your role, committee and current projects.

Join a STAN Committee

You don't need to join the Board to play a meaningful role at STAN.

Committee members contribute their knowledge, ideas and skills to specific areas of STAN's work. Committee service can also be a great way to get to know the organization, build your network and gain leadership experience.

​

Committee terms are two years, with the possibility of renewal. Opportunities to chair a committee may also be available.

​

Current committees

• Membership Committee: Meets approximately 2–4 times per year; average commitment of 5 hours per month

• Finance Committee: Meets approximately 5–8 times per year; average commitment of 3 hours per month

• Governance and Nominations Committee: Meets approximately 3–5 times per year; average commitment of 4 hours per month

• Conference Planning Committee: Meets approximately 6–12 times per year; average commitment of 5 hours per month

• Professional Development Committee: Meets approximately 4–8 times per year; average commitment of 5 hours per month

• Communications Committee: Meets approximately 4–6 times per year; average commitment of 5 hours per month

 

Meeting schedules and time commitments may vary depending on current priorities, projects and committee leadership.

Who are we looking for?

STAN benefits from having people with different experiences, perspectives, professional backgrounds and skills working together.

• STEAM education, engagement, promotion or communication

Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.

We also value people who bring initiative, creativity, integrity, diplomacy and a willingness to contribute. You do not need to have experience in every area listed above to apply.

Applications are welcome throughout the year. To be considered as part of the upcoming annual Board election process, please apply by January 22, 2027. The Board may also appoint candidates to available Board positions at other times during the year.
